Reptiles - Turtles : Common Box Turtle
Terrapene carolina
Well, this was unexpected! This first photo is exactly what I saw as I was walking along the Lower Tilley trail one day. I took photos and then waited to see if the turtle would come out of its shell. In photos 3 and 4, you can see the most the turtle stuck its head out. After that, other hikers with dogs kept coming along. Finally, I placed the turtle off-trail and behind some rocks where it would be safer.
Common Box Turtles are not native to the Western United States. Likely this guy had been a pet that had either wandered away from home or had been "released" by its owners.
The "door" to the box. It is hinged along its straight side.
You can see a couple of the turtle's claws sticking out here. They are great for digging.
I actually sat by the side of the trail for a while, waiting to see if the turtle would emerge again. Answer: Nope.
